A plain old calendar is a great public relations tool. By being aware of holidays, designated awareness days (and weeks and months), Congressional timetables, and even Hollywood agendas, you can tailor marketing, public relations and advocacy initiatives to topical issues. This page has ours and other related events of interest. We are currently using the free Google calendar tool.
Don't miss the obvious opportunities for raising awareness about issues, like tying in Martin Luther King Day with your call for an end to inequality. Others are not so readily apparent-but a little bit of imagination can go a long way. Use the excuse of the New Year to call upon your legislators to make resolutions to work on behalf of positive change. Or, Valentine's Day might provide an excuse to show who really cares by publicizing an activist's (or leader's) good deeds. Do a little brainstorming to see if the imagery of Groundhog Day might lend itself to a creative campaign. What about Mardi Gras, the symbolic day of excess before Lent, and Mardi Gras' association with New Orleans, which has yet to recover from Katrina? Take some time to review our own event calendar and see how many inventive connections you can make.
